Billing periods on documents and lines
Invoices and credit notes can now state the period they bill for, on the document and on each line, for example the month of a subscription.
Invoices and credit notes often bill for a period of time, such as a month of a subscription or a quarter of rent. You can now state that period on the document and on each line with the new billingPeriod field, and read it from documents you receive.
What changed
- New
billingPeriodfield: An optionalbillingPeriodwith astartDateandendDate(YYYY-MM-DD) on invoices, credit notes, self-billing invoices and self-billing credit notes. It is the invoicing period (BG-14) of EN 16931. - Billing periods on lines: Lines take the same
billingPeriod, the invoice line period (BG-26), so each line can state the period it covers, for example when one invoice bills several subscriptions. - Every format: The period is written to and read from UBL as
cac:InvoicePeriodand CII asram:BillingSpecifiedPeriod, so Peppol BIS 3, XRechnung, the French formats and Factur-X all carry it. - Shown in the PDF: The generated PDF shows the document period in the header and the line period under each line.
Validation
A period needs at least a startDate or an endDate, and the endDate may not be before the startDate. When the document has a billing period, the period of each line must fall within it (PEPPOL-EN16931-R110 and R111). A document that breaks these rules is refused before anything is sent; for a line outside the document period, the error names the line.
Example
{
"invoiceNumber": "INV-2025-0042",
"billingPeriod": {
"startDate": "2025-03-01",
"endDate": "2025-03-31"
},
"lines": [
{
"name": "Pro plan subscription",
"netPriceAmount": "49.00",
"billingPeriod": {
"startDate": "2025-03-01",
"endDate": "2025-03-31"
}
}
]
}What you need to do
Nothing: billingPeriod is optional, and documents without it are sent as before. If your invoices bill for a period, add it so the buyer's software can book the cost in the right period.
